Quick Answers to frequently asked questions
FAQs
What is SMP?
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a customized cosmetic hair tattoo that replicates the look of your hair follicles, concealing thinning spots on the scalp and giving the appearance of thicker, fuller hair.
Do I have to cut my hair or shave my head?
No! You do not have to cut your hair or shave your head for a density / hair thickening treatment.
Will SMP stop my hair from growing?
No! SMP will not damage your existing hair follicles or interfere with any hair growth regimens. In fact, needling the scalp during the SMP process can have the opposite effect because it encourages increased blood flow to thinning areas.
How long does SMP last?
On average, SMP lasts 3-5 years, sometimes 7+ years depending on your skin type. SMP typically lasts longer when sun exposure is limited and aftercare instructions are followed during the healing process. Over time, SMP will fade into a light shadow that can be refreshed any time after the tattoo is at least 12 months healed.
What if I continue to experience hair loss?
SMP can be adjusted at any time to cover additional hair loss.
What if I start going gray?
SMP naturally fades to a light shadow over time. If your hair is currently graying, or starts to gray after your SMP treatment, we recommend a refresh session in which a lighter pigment blend will be applied throughout the scalp, giving off a “salt and pepper” look.
Why does a full treatment take 2-4 sessions?
The full treatment process takes 4-8 weeks. Each session is spaced 1-2 weeks apart, giving each treatment sufficient time to heal. To get the most natural results, the tattoo is applied in layers. This decreases the risk of pigment migration (blobs forming on the scalp) and allows for the tattoo to be actively adjusted each session based on healed results.
How long does each session last?
The length of your session is dependent on the coverage needed. Small thinning spots will take less time to tattoo than larger ones. You can expect your session to last anywhere from 2-4 hours (from start to finish).
How soon can I resume normal activities after getting SMP?
You can resume most normal activities right away. Aftercare restrictions during the healing process include keeping your scalp dry for at least 3 days after your session. This means no pools, hot tubs, or saunas. Heavy sweating is also discouraged during this 3 day time period. If you experience redness following your session, this redness will fade after 24 hours. You are able to wear a hat during the healing process provided the hat is new or freshly washed.
Will anyone notice I’ve had it done?
At Revive Ink, we focus on natural results that match your unique hair follicles. To an unknowing bystander, your tattoo will look like hair. Friends and family may notice a slight difference after your first session. The most significant differences are typically seen after sessions 2 and 3.
What needles and pigment do you use?
We use single use, medical grade micro needles that are specially made for the fine detail work involved in scalp micropigmentation.
Can I still dye my hair?
Yes! SMP is color matched to your roots. If you do not dye your hair down to the root, the tattoo will blend in with the rest of your hair follicles.
Does it hurt?
SMP is applied at a shallower depth than a traditional tattoo. Every scalp is different, and every client’s pain threshold is different. Our client’s typically rate the pain level a 1-3/10. We do have numbing agents available, and we take frequent breaks throughout the treatment process.
How much does it cost?
The price of a SMP treatment varies depending on the coverage needed. Our quotes include ALL sessions necessary to achieve your desired results and range from $300 – $3000 (total cost). A $3000 treatment entails coverage of the entire scalp. For a quick quote, fill out a consultation form or text a clear photo of your scalp to (801) 909-3444, and get all your questions answered.
